Doran Resources traces its origins to Doran & Associates, Inc., a geological and petroleum consulting firm founded in Pittsburgh in 1977 by Weldon C. Doran, Jr. Over the course of more than a decade, the company drilled and operated more than a thousand oil and gas wells across the Appalachian Basin — principally in Pennsylvania, New York, West Virginia, Ohio, Kentucky, and Tennessee — with additional interests extending into Texas, Louisiana, and California.

The operating company was sold, and the family's mineral and energy holdings, accumulated through those years of active development, were retained and have continued under the stewardship of the next generation as Doran Resources.
